An integrated library system, also known as a library management system, is described as a type of enterprise resource planning system designed for libraries. You can use that idea on a church shelf by keeping four things together: items you own, orders you placed, invoices you paid, and names of people who borrow. When those four stay in one place, a team of two or three volunteers can see what is out, what is due back, and what still needs payment without searching separate notebooks.
02How Does One Database Keep Orders, Items, and Names Together?
A typical system rests on three parts: a relational database, software for working with that database, and two graphical interfaces, one for borrowers and one for staff. Most systems divide work into discrete programs called modules, joined through a unified interface. 04Why Shared Standards Changed the Work
The next shift came with MARC standards in the 1960s, at the same time as computer technology grew, and library automation was born. Starting in the late 1960s and continuing into the 1970s, bibliographic services using new online technology and the shared MARC vocabulary entered the market. They included OCLC, dated to 1967, Research Libraries Group, which has since merged with OCLC, and Washington Library Network, which became Western Library Network and is now also part of OCLC. An experimental pilot called the Intrex Retrieval System ran on CTSS starting in the late 1960s as a machine-oriented bibliographic storage and retrieval system, with a catalog of roughly 15,000 journal articles, and it served to develop and test concepts for library automation. 06Why Do Barcodes Save a Volunteer Evening?
With most software, you can cut manual entry by using a barcode scanner. Some software is designed, or can be extended with an additional module, to integrate scanner functions. Most vendors provide some type of scanner integration, and some print barcode labels. On a Sunday morning, that means you scan a book, a study guide, or a kit piece, and the loan attaches to the right borrower ID without retyping titles. 08What Changed When Catalogs Moved Online?
With the evolution of the Internet through the 1990s and into the 2000s, systems began letting users engage more actively through OPACs and online web-based portals. Users could log into library accounts to reserve or renew books, and authenticate themselves for access to library-subscribed online databases. Education for librarians added a new focus on systems analysis. The market grew fast, with industry sales averaging approximately 500 million US dollars annually by 2002, compared with just 50 million US dollars in 1982. 10What Small Libraries Learned From Open Tools
By the mid-to-late 2000s, vendors had increased both the number of services offered and their prices, which brought dissatisfaction among many smaller libraries. At the same time, open-source ILS was in its early stages of testing. Some libraries turned to open-source options such as Koha and Evergreen. Common reasons noted were to avoid vendor lock-in, avoid license fees, and participate in software development. Freedom from vendors also allowed libraries to set priorities by urgency rather than by what a vendor could offer. Libraries that moved found that vendors were then more likely to provide quality service to keep a partnership, since vendors no longer held power by owning the software and tying libraries to strict contracts. The comparison lists Koha from the Koha Community, released in 2000 with a stable release in 2024, written in Perl for ILS use under GPL 3.0 or later, and PMB from the PMB development team, released in 2002 with a stable release in 2024, written in PHP for ILS use under CECILL 2.0. A survey group, Librarytechnology.org, polled over 2,400 libraries and noted open-source use at 2 percent in 2008, 8 percent in 2009, 12 percent in 2010, and 11 percent in 2011, then 14 percent in the survey published in April 2013, with 113 of 794 public and academic contracts, or 14 percent, for support for Evergreen and Koha. The SCLENDS consortium shows how sharing worked in practice: after the success of Evergreen for the Georgia PINES consortium, the South Carolina State Library, with some local public libraries, formed SCLENDS to share resources and use the open-source nature of Evergreen to meet specific needs, and by October 2011, just 2 years after operations began, 13 public library systems across 15 counties had joined, in addition to the South Carolina State Library.
