The Parish Shelf

You plan lessons, VBS weeks, Bible studies, or library shelves with limited time and limited storage. The Parish Shelf explains how Lutheran and mainline Protestant congregations in the United States select curricula and VBS kits, maintain parish libraries, and keep track of books and boxes that move between churches.

01What you find in the three sections

You can browse three sections that match common tasks in a small church. Each article names the public sources it uses so you can check them yourself.

  • Ministry Collections: you see how congregations compare curricula, VBS kits, and Bible studies, and how they note age range, doctrine, cost, and storage needs.
  • Sharing and Lending: you see how congregations set loan rules, pack kits for transport, and manage resource-sharing networks with nearby churches.
  • Cataloging and Organizing: you see how volunteers label books, keep simple catalogs, and arrange shelves so teachers find items without lengthy searches.

02How you can read the articles

The site is edited by the Parish Shelf editorial team. The texts are based on public sources named in each article. When an article describes a publisher, a distributor, or a church body, it describes them in the third person. When facts are missing or a source gives limited detail, the article states the limit so you know what remains unclear.

You are part of the intended audience if you serve as a pastor, a Christian education volunteer, a parish librarian, a VBS coordinator, or a member of a worship committee. The notes fit small congregations, with attention to Midwestern mainline churches where volunteers take on many roles.

You can apply the steps during the school year and in summer programs.
